What’s the Difference Between ICE and EV Car Repair?
There are several differences between repairing an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle and an electric vehicle (EV), including maintenance requirements, repair costs, and repair time:
Maintenance
ICE vehicles require more maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and fuel system inspections. EVs have fewer moving parts than their internal combustion equivalents. They also have simpler powertrains, so they require less maintenance, such as basic checks on the lights, brakes, tyres, suspension, and steering arrangement.
Repair Costs
EV repairs can be more expensive than ICE vehicle repairs. This is typically down to higher labour and material costs. However, EVs have fewer mechanical issues and simpler repairs due to their single-speed gearboxes and fewer internal moving parts.
Repair Time
EV repairs can take longer than ICE vehicle repairs because of the high-voltage battery and electrical components. These components are located in different areas of the vehicle, so they may need to be detached to access other parts. Unique internal layouts or configurations may also contribute towards wait times, however, this will be addressed by the team when you get your quote.
Repair Technology
EVs require more advanced repair technology, including equipment for reprogramming onboard software, safety apparatus, and EV-compatible diagnostic equipment.
Tyres
EV tyres are more expensive than regular tyres. The disparity in cost is due to electric vehicles accelerating differently from regular ICE vehicles. Electric vehicles also typically weigh more due to the onboard battery weight. This contributes to higher torque, and therefore, a tyre with higher torque handling is needed.
The cost of these specialist tyres may be offset by the increased lifespan of modern EV tyres, however. We find that the cost/ mile is about the same between motors.
